The Okotoks Dawgs (5-2) take on the (1-6) Fort McMurray Giants in the finale of their three-game series today, June 11. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05pm.

The Dawgs picked up their second win of the road trip in an extra inning thriller last night. With one out and the bases juiced in the bottom of the tenth, Omar Celaya issued a strikeout before catching a line drive, giving his teammates a shot at walking away with the win. They did just that. Ryan Humeniuk set the stage with an infield single and Peter Hutzal scorched a ball off the left field wall, driving in the winning run.

The Dawgs finished with a 33-14 record a year ago, their highest win total since the summer of 2011. How did they start? Well, not so hot. In 2016, Okotoks was sluggish out of gate, holding a 3-4 record through seven games.

Chris Horvath gets the nod today in the finale of the Dawgs’ five-game road trip. In his first start, the Wayne State product earned the win while pitching five innings, allowing six earned and striking out three. Horvath is the active leader in games started (24), complete games (2), innings pitched (152.1), victories (12), ERA (3.90), strikeouts (121), Ks/9 (7.6) and strikeout to walk ratio (2.16) at Wayne State. In 2017, he was voted to the ALL-GLIAC First-Team as a starting pitcher.

Hutzal has had a flair for the dramatic this year, playing a big part in both one-run victories. In our home opener, Hutzal drove a double to the gap before Greg Cullen batted him home to score the winning run in walk-off fashion. Last night, number two drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th.

Although the Dawgs are away from Seaman Stadium for the next three days, there’s no reason not to be geared up for one of the most anticipated games of the season. June 18 against Brooks, the Dawgs will host their annual Father’s Day event.

The Man Van will be parked outside Seaman Stadium gates for the entirety of the game, helping Okotokians get checked for prostate cancer.

Greg Cullen (R): 11-27, 5 R, 4 2B, 11 RBI, .407 AVG [seven-game hitting streak, leads team in RBI]

Aderly Perez (R): 4-12, 6 R, 2 RBI, .333 AVG

The Dawgs have a day off Monday, June 12 before a home-and-home series with the Lethbridge Bulls June 13-14.
