The Okotoks Dawgs (9-4) take on the Edmonton Prospects (8-4) in a two-game series beginning tonight, June 19.
The Dawgs extended their winning streak to two against the Brooks Bombers on the back of some quality pitching and timely hitting. Chris Horvath fired seven strong innings and the bats took Okotoks the rest of the way in a tightly knit, 4-1 contest. Peter Hutzal’s two-out, two-RBI double in the sixth put the game out of reach. The bullpen came in and shut things down while Tyler Burdett earned his fifth save of the campaign. Okotoks currently sits in first place in the West division by a half-game.
The red and white lead the season series, 2-1. Okotoks took a 9-6 victory during opening weekend -- Greg Cullen had a solid night, pitching in three hits and two RBI while Jayse McLean also had a multi-hit contest. The offence stalled in Edmonton in game two, however, coming out on the wrong side of an 11-2 loss. Pitcher Noah Gapp threw a complete game, limiting the Dawgs to two runs on five hits. Okotoks exacted their revenge against Gapp in game three, lighting him up for eight runs over four innings of work in a 8-1 win.
“DEFENCE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS”
In the past two games against Edmonton and Brooks, the Dawgs have allowed just one earned run. The pitching has been stellar. Following a Graham Brunner victory, where he allowed just two hits against the Prospects over six innings of work, Horvath followed that up with a six-hit shutout.
