NOTES: Dawgs at Prospects

Tuesday June 20, 2017

The Okotoks Dawgs (10-4) take on the Edmonton Prospects (8-5) in the finale of their two-game series tonight, June 20.

The Dawgs extended their winning streak to three last night against the Edmonton Prospects, winning their third of the season series. Anthony Balderas pitched five innings of shutout baseball allowing just two hits while John Hawk continued to swing a hot stick on the other side of the ball. Hawk has now hit safely in six straight games with two home runs to his name. The bullpen continued their dominance, firing two scoreless innings between Drew Smernes, Corey Jackson and Tyler Burdett. Burdett earned his sixth save and has yet to allow a run this season.

Peter Hutzal and Greg Cullen have played in 13 of 14 games this season, while Brendan Rose, Jayse McLean and Kody Funderburk have played in 12. Cullen leads the club with 53 at-bats.

Not only has McLean played in nearly every single game this year, he put up video game like numbers a week ago. In four games played, the Montana product hit three home runs (all coming against the Lethbridge Bulls) while recording seven hits, seven RBI and a .538 average. He now sits 5th in the WMBL in average, hitting .372.

The Dawgs have had a tendency to gain an early lead in their last four contests. Against the Medicine Hat Mavericks June 16, Okotoks scored two in the first before scoring seven in the second against the Prospects the very next day. On Father’s Day, the boys got ahead 1-0, winning 4-1 in front of a packed house. Last night, the red and white were up to much of the same, scoring three in the top of the second.

July 1st comes quickly, so make sure to grab your tickets to one of the biggest games this season. Live bands, fireworks, you name it, the Dawgs will have you set up for a memorable night as they take on the reigning WMBL champion, the Swift Current 57’s. The gates will open at 3pm!
