NOTES: Dawgs vs. Express

The Okotoks Dawgs (10-4) take on the Moose Jaw Miller Express (10-7) in the beginning of a two-game set at home tonight, June 22. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.

The Dawgs extended their winning streak to three against the Edmonton Prospects, winning their third of the season series. Anthony Balderas pitched five innings of shutout baseball allowing just two hits while John Hawk continued to swing a hot stick on the other side of the ball. Hawk has now hit safely in six straight games with two home runs to his name. The bullpen continued their dominance, firing two scoreless innings between Drew Smernes, Corey Jackson and Tyler Burdett. Burdett earned his sixth save and has yet to allow a run this season.

Peter Hutzal and Greg Cullen have played in 13 of 14 games this season, while Brendan Rose, Jayse McLean and Kody Funderburk have played in 12. Cullen leads the club with 53 at-bats.

Jack Rupe makes his Dawgs debut tonight against Moose Jaw. With the University of California San Diego, Rupe pitched to a 5-2 record while holding on to a 3.19 ERA. In 53 innings, he fanned 31 batters.

Sophomore Kody Funderburk earned a spot on the first team. The big first baseman tortured ACCAC pitching all season, tallying a .400 batting average with a .651 slugging percentage and a .504 on-base percentage. He hammered eight home runs on the season while knocking in 55 RBI and drawing 40 walks. Funderburk had 15 doubles and five triples while scoring 44 runs and has signed on to play with Dallas Baptist next season. With the Dawgs, Funderburk is hitting .260 with two home runs and 10 RBI through 13 games.

July 1st comes quickly, so make sure to grab your tickets to one of the biggest games this season. Live bands, fireworks, you name it, the Dawgs will have you set up for a memorable night as they take on the reigning WMBL champion, the Swift Current 57’s. The gates will open at 3pm!
