The Okotoks Dawgs (15-8) host the Swift Current 57’s (14-8) tonight for our annual Canada Day game. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.

Justin Vernia threw eight shutout innings a night ago, allowing just three hits in a 3-0 victory. Following the first three innings of the contest, Vernia did not allow a hit the rest of the way. The quality outing was the longest for any Dawgs starting pitcher this season. Prior to yesterday’s game, Chris Horvath had pitched into the seventh inning twice this season. Kody Funderburk highlighted the offence with a solo-shot to right-centre.

Craig Spencer made his debut in a Dawgs uniform last night, starting at shortstop. The MacMurray College product was an emergency substitution, taking over for an injured Peter Hutzal. Spencer came to the stadium at 5am as part of the field crew before working as an assistant coach from 9am-5pm with the Dawgs Academy. At 7pm he got the call that he would be the starting shortstop for the collegiate team, and didn’t disappoint. Spencer ended the night with a single, continuing the inning that allowed the Dawgs to further their lead.

Anthony Balderas gets the ball tonight, looking to improve on his 1-1 record. Normally a relief pitcher, Balderas has embraced the starting role. In Edmonton, Balderas threw five innings of shutout baseball, limiting the Prospects to just two hits.

Happy 150th birthday, Canada! Seaman Stadium is completely sold out tonight as the Dawgs look for their fourth straight win. Live bands, fireworks, you name it, we will have you set up for a memorable night. The first place Dawgs in the West take on the second place 57’s in the East.

Matt Lloyd: 23-63, 13 R, 5 2B, 2 HR, 14 RBI, .365 AVG [Four-game hitting streak]

Kody Funderburk (R): 27-84, 14 R, 5 HR, 19 RBI, .321 AVG

The Dawgs continue their homestand, clashing with the 57’s again tomorrow before taking on the Weyburn Beavers July 3-4, and ending with the Fort McMurray Giants, July 6.
