The Okotoks Dawgs (16-9) host the Weyburn Beavers (13-12) for the first time tonight as part of a two-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
The red and white had a game to forget a night ago, splitting their two-game series with the Swift Current 57’s with a 17-6 loss. A Kody Funderburk two-run blast and a multi-hit day from Zach Hanna wasn’t enough to overcome the potent offence from the reigning WMBL champions, who collected 21 hits on the day. The bright spot on the defensive side came from Omar Celaya, who pitched one inning of relief, striking out two.
MOVING UP THE CHARTS
Since coming to the Dawgs this summer, Matt Lloyd has been nothing short of spectacular with the bat in his hands. As it stands, his .371 average is good for seventh in the WMBL. In 17 games, he’s notched 26 hits, hitting safely in each contest except two.
KNOW YOUR STARTER
CJ Lewington looks to improve on his 0-2 record tonight against the Weyburn Beavers. The Arkansas Pine Bluff product had his best outing in relief against the Moose Jaw Miller Express June 22. In three innings, Lewington allowed two hits with no earned runs.
Today we will be celebrating Saskatchewan Day. Enjoy a Saskatchewan-themed photo on the scoreboard before every inning, and we will be selling Pilsner a dollar off for one game only! Wear your Riders’ gear, it’s the day to do it!
HITTING IS CONTAGIOUS
Ryan Humeniuk: Two-game hitting streak
Greg Cullen: Three-game hitting streak [8 hits over that span]
Matt Lloyd: Six-game hitting streak [11 hits over that span]
Eddie Sanchez: Seven-game hitting streak [14 hits over that span]
Cameron Campbell (R): 5-13, 4 R, 2 2B, .385 AVG
Kody Funderburk (R): 29-92, 16 R, 6 HR, 21 RBI, .315 AVG
The Dawgs continue their homestand against Weyburn tomorrow before ending with the Fort McMurray Giants, July 6.
