The Okotoks Dawgs (24-10) begin their seven-game road trip against the Medicine Hat Mavericks (18-17) today July 16, looking for their eighth straight win. The red and white are 4-2 against the Mavericks this year.
In their Saturday tie-dye jersey’s, the Dawgs stretched their winning streak to seven over the Mavericks in a 9-3 game. Jack Rupe Jr. earned his first win of the campaign, firing five strong innings while limiting the Mavericks to two runs. He struck out three in the victory. Omar Celaya came on in relief and fired a clean inning of work. Behind him it was the trio of Taylor Davis, Corey Jackson and Tyler Burdett shutting down the Mavericks the rest of the way. Offensively, Greg Cullen had a stand-out night, registering three hits while his Niagara teammate, Joel Brophy, blasted his first home run of the season.
SHUTTING THINGS DOWN
The bullpen for the Dawgs has been fantastic in the last few months. Burdett is currently tied for the WMBL lead in saves with nine, while Omar Celaya hasn’t allowed an earned run since June 8. Jackson can be put into the same category, having allowed just four earned runs all season long.
KNOW YOUR STARTER
Chris Horvath gets the ball today, looking to improve on his WMBL’s eighth best ERA, which currently sits at 3.53. His best start of the year came against the Brooks Bombers, where he tossed seven innings of shutout baseball while striking out four. The Wayne State product is 3-1 on the campaign.
