The Okotoks Dawgs (25-11) look for the two-game sweep against the Yorkton Cardinals (10-27) today, July 19. First pitch flies at 7:05pm.
Just under 1000 kilometres east of Okotoks, the Dawgs found the win column in their first of six games in Saskatchewan, taking a 6-4 victory over the Cardinals. Anthony Balderas fired six innings of four-run baseball -- three of them earned -- tallying his team-leading fourth win of the season. The right-handed senior fanned six without any command issues en route to his third quality outing in a row. The top of the lineup in Greg Cullen, Eddie Sanchez, Zach Hanna and Kody Funderburk did the majority of the damage, combining for six of the Dawgs’ eight hits and were responsible for five of six RBI.
The Dawgs now have their biggest lead of the season in the West and are 4.5 games ahead of the second place Lethbridge Bulls.
A YEAR AGO IN SASKATCHEWAN
The Dawgs have been successful in long road trips in the past. During the 2016 campaign, Okotoks won five of six games in Saskatchewan, losing only to the Swift Current 57’s. The red and white swept the Moose Jaw Miller Express, Weyburn Beavers, and took a game against the Medicine Hat Mavericks before ending with a 7-5 loss in Swift Current. Each game was decided by two runs or less.
Okotoks had a season to remember in 2016 while winning the West division with a 33-14 record -- their highest win total since the summer of 2011. With 11 games remaining, Okotoks will have to go 9-2 the rest of the way to surpass that mark.
