Okotoks, AB - The Okotoks Dawgs are pleased to announce that Kody Funderburk (Dallas Baptist) has been named the WMBL Most Valuable Player. Behind him, Matt Lloyd (Indiana University) was named top Canadian Rookie while Anthony Balderas, Tyler Burdett, Eddie Sanchez, Greg Cullen, Zach Hanna and John Hawk were named WMBL All-Stars.
Funderburk had a season to remember, leading the league in home runs (15), RBI (55) and was in the top 10 for hits (62) and batting average (.339). The slugger out of Queen Creek, Arizona made Dawgs history July 12 in Brooks, where he surpassed Sean Kettering from the 2011 club for most home runs ever by a Dawg in a single campaign. Funderburk recorded five multi-home run games this year, and was equally as outstanding on the mound, tossing nine shutout innings.
Lloyd swung a hot stick all year long, going just three games the entire 2017 campaign without a hit. The local Okotoks product was the only player in the WMBL to register an average of over .400 (.402), at one point, recording a franchise-high 24-game hit streak. Lloyd placed third in the league in hits (66), doubles (16) -- trailing by just three -- with seven less games played and led the way with a team-leading 22 multi-hit games in 2017. He finished the year with eight home runs and 38 RBI.
